ARTIST RESEARCH

Source
Mario Hugo is a New York based, Illustrator and graphic designer. I chose some example of his work as I believe they represent an essence of the word melt. I also like the colours, layout and structure he uses in his work which are inspiring.

Si Scott is an typographic artist who hand draws and uses ink to create his images. I like the detail and deffintion in his swirls and is an inspiration to my melt project and I want to incorporate drips and swirls in one of my designs.

Ryan is a US designer and illustrator I found on blogspot. This was created by using hot glue on poster card and using red crayons to add depth and colour. I like the use of technique he used to create his work and how it projects so many emotions such as death, passion and pain. The hot glue is a good way of making a melting effect

Salik Rohman is a graphic design student in London who decided to work with a melting typography. I like how he went into dense research by allowing his frozen letters melt to see were the drips formed and how it came to his final design.

Adam Robert is sixth form student studying art and design, I like how he was inspired by German illustration and the 3D use of his letters to make the melting style more fuller and interesting.

Luke Lucas is an Australian based graphic designer he created this logo/poster design for a Australian summer music festival called "Summerdayze". I like the textures in his writing and ice cream cone and I think it communicates the term melt very well due to the ice cream, season and style.

This was created by one of my favourite typographers Alex Trochut I like the use of textures and digital style he was used to create this. The splatter effect translates to the word melt effectively due to it connecting with liquids and solid things decreasing and moving shape.

Acetate

Another thing I wanted to explore was using materials such as acetate to create a stencil design. So I research images and designers to gain inspiration from.

This is a type stencil created by Oricannoodles, I love they way they have incorporated an image within the words and the scale  and intricacy that has gone into creating the image.

DIGITAL TYPE RESEARCH

For the first part of my research I selected one of my ideas from the brain storm which was "traced digital type". I found this process would be the best choice in terms on design as my strengths are not in illustration. I then went onto the popular typographic website www.dafont.com and simply typed in words and phrases I collated from looking up the definition of melt. I chose to search the words dripping, heart, ice and other design ideas and found these results.

ALPHABET SOUP - VISUAL THINKING

With my newfound appreciation and understanding of typographic forms I was assigned to manipulate exising letterforms that represented the word 'melt'.

For my set of letter forms I wanted to created a varied series, exploring different variations into the word 'melt' and it's meaning. I researched thoroughly into the word through the use of a dictionary and the different words where the inspiration and motivation for my designs.

For our brief we were given words out of the randomiser and my word was melt. Our specific guidelines were to create 10 - 10x10 individual styles using any chosen letter form. I decided to choose the letter 'W' as I like the structure and it would go with a lot of the idea's I had. The brief also mentioned to keep the task simple, easy to repeat and in monochrome colours.

I wanted to think how I could visually create this and the obvious responses would be to use dripping elements or foods. I could incorporate these ideas with an edge and although I like these ideas I wanted to see how I  could go beyond this. So for my first bit of research I went online and looked up the definition of melt to find alternative meanings and phrases to expand my ideas.

Words that  stood out to me where : Fade, ice, heat, fuse, blend, soften in feeling, heart, heat, vanish, dissolve, love, sorrow.

With the words identified I then brain stormed ideas of what I could possibly do with my word and selected letter form. My initial ideas stemmed from

  • Distorted typography
  • Crumbling typography
  • Dripping - paint, ice cream, water, liquid
  • Sequence of falling A's that would act in a melting motion
  • Smoke & flame typography
  • Left over ash
  • Burnt typography
  • Acetate with cut out droplets
  • Candle wax on fabric
  • Sewing
  • Black background and white markers
  • Trace digital typography
With some initial idea's I began to research different font's and typefaces for inspiration.
