Notes:
  • Change of tone - more pressing
  • Anti-consumerist
  • Consumerism has developed, grown and the situation has got worse
  • A perpetuating system
  • Politicisation
  • Redraft
  • A call to action
  • A list of false needs instead of essentials "sneakers, butt toners"
  • Design activism : charity, education and steering away from consumerism

The 2000 manifesto, focuses on how the designers and teachers are to blame for the desaturation in effective design "Graphic designers, art directors and visual communicators who have been raised in a worlds in which the techniques and apparatus of advertising have been presented to us as the most lucrative, effective and desirable use of our talents. Many design teachers and mentors promote this belief".

However the 1964 manifesto juxtaposes this idea and suggests that society is to blame "We have been brought up in a world in which the techniques and apparatus of advertising have persistently been presented to us".

It also highlights how money dictates the reasons for designers to choose a commercial path "Commercial work has always paid the bills, but many graphic designers have now let it become, in large measure, what graphic designers do." Suggesting that they will to continue to create this type of design as long as theres easy money made.

'it's better to be inside the system and work to make a change'
