SECRET 7": ARTIST RESEARCH 2

To start the research for this project I decided to look into the band and the style the had to get and idea of to produce the sleeve appropriately to the client and audience.

The Band

Black Sabbath are an English rock band, formed in Birmingham in 1968, by guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward. The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years. Originally formed in 1968 as a heavy blues rock band named Earth, the band began incorporating occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and tuned-down guitars. Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war.

Album Art

Although Black Sabbath have gone through many line-ups and stylistic changes, their original sound focused on ominous lyrics and doomy music. This can be seen through the aesthetic of their album covers which use very dark colours and ruff grainy textures, which will be something I want to incorporate into my design.

 Concert posters / Memorabilia

I looked at a collect of the bands old connect posters to also get a sense of their style, again the band has a very rock and roll, edgy, dark feel towards them which is something I will intent to include in my design. One of the main things I realised not only in the song I am focusing on 'Age of reason' by the band is the theme of ' apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war.' that they sing about. I will research into this further through visual research to gain a sense of direction for this brief.
