MY 3 RULES

My 3 Rules

  1. The colours should flow consistently and relevantly.
  2. The design must be concise, crisp and clear.
  3. The overall elements of the design should be harmonized.

I was assigned to find graphic designs that fulfilled and specified each one of my rules.

1.

Waldo Trommler Paints Brand Identity

Waldo Trommler Paints approached Ukrainian design studio Reynolds and Reyner with a challenge. The small Finnish company was planning to enter the US market and desperately needed a brand that really stood out from the rest of the traditional brands of paint in the market.
The results are absolutely outstanding – a colourful and vibrant identity that makes the new brand friendly and memorable.

Tuli & Savu Magazine

Finnish designers Lotta Nieminen and Janine Rewell worked in collaboration to create the layout and illustrations for the anniversary issue of poetry magazine Tuli & Savu.
“The visual concept was based on paper surfaces and their shades, and used in typographic illustrations made of paper throughout the magazine. A die cut cover was designed to create an optical illusion of folded corners.”
- Lotta Nieminen

We articulated the brand identity across a packaging system, print literature and exhibition graphics to showcase the angular nature of the logo. Designed in collaboration with Joshua Swanbeck.”

Herbalist & Alchemist Branding by Chad Michael

This rebrand of herbal remedy company Herbalist & Alchemist is an outstanding piece of work by New York-based graphic designer Chad Michael.
“I wanted to take the client in a much hipper, modern and slightly more sophisticated direction while rethinking the target market and gearing it towards a more youthful crowd. The type treatments & patterns were created from the ancient language of alchemy which is what the company’s traditions are built upon.”
- Chad Michael.

I was also assaigned to find alternative media that also fulfilled my rules.

House on the flight of birds

House on the flight of birds
Amazing architecture project by Bernardo Rodrigues.
From Designboom:
“Portuguese studio Bernardo Rodrigues Arquitecto has completed ‘house on the flight of birds’, a single family home on St. Michael Island in the Azores, Portugal. Informed by the landscape and the prevalent high winds and rain, the design looks to establish a strategy that allows the family to remain connected and exposed to the outdoors regardless of the conditions.
A series of stacked and intersecting volumes are linked by a dominant contoured form, which appears to cut directly through the home. Developing a collection of variously sized sheltered terraces and an undulating roof top patio, the contrasting expression along with a dominant red wall, both defines the overall aesthetic and the organization of space.”

Adidas Laces Signage System

Adidas Laces Signage System

Adidas Laces Signage System by Büro Uebele
Awesome signage system and interior design for Adidas by German studio Büro Uebele.
Here’s an excerpt from their press release:
“The name ‘laces’ has a metaphorical value, capturing what the building says about the networked communications of a globally active corporation – a market leader in the development of sports goods and apparel. Movement is the essence of sport – and movement also defines the design language: turbocharged typography runs through the new adidas design centre. It is also reflected in the typeface of the signage system: fast and light, it leaps and bounds across walls and balustrades, its form vibrating and altering in the process.

South Yarra House

South Yarra House

Gorgeous house in Melbourne, Australia by LSA Architects.
“A broad mix of architectural styles characterizes this densely populated South Yarra street, from traditional pitched-roof weatherboard terraces to flat-roofed rendered block-work apartment buildings. Narrow buildings sit tightly side-by-side along the one-way street.
The project aimed to provide a residence that makes a statement within the eclectic streetscape, capturing your gaze and holding your attention as you approach, enter and explore the home. Light-filled spacious internal spaces maintain strong connections to the exterior of the building and the home’s multiple courtyards, blurring internal/external boundaries.”

Light Sculptures
Light Sculptures
Light Sculptures by Makoto Tojiki
Impressive light sculptures by Japanese artist Makoto Tojiki.
“Makoto Tojiki is an artist and designer who uses light as his primary medium of expression. Tojiki, a 1998 industrial design engineering graduate of Kinki University, devoted his personal time to experimenting with light while employed as an industrial designer. In 2003, he launched his career as a full-time artist.
His most recent ‘No Shadow’ series is inspired by the interconnectedness of light and shadow and how they can be manipulated and controlled. Tojiki begins his creative process by breaking down the light and the shadow to capture the essence of their symbiosis resulting in fleeting images that are as ephemeral and enigmatic as shadow itself.”

The Future of Food: Paper Sculpture by Zim&Zou
Awesome paper sculpture created by Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann to illustrate the cover of Icon Magazine.
Zim&Zou is a French studio that explores different fields including paper sculpture, installation, graphic design and illustration.
“Rather than composing images on a computer, they prefer creating real objects with paper and taking photos out of them. A number of intricate illustrations actually come from the three-dimensional installations made by Zim&Zou. Their choice of paper is due to the versatility and good quality of the material, especially when it is sculpted and photographed. Zim&Zou’s strength is to be a complementary and polyvalent duo.”

Cool Cassette Art

Cool Cassette Art by Erika Iris Simmons
Erika Iris Simmons is a freelance artist that likes to “take things – random things – like what you would find at a garage sale or in a thrift store- and make them into composite art.”
“Most of my pieces become portraits of people associated with the item I’ve chosen. I don’t really add any paint or pigments… I usually just take things apart and re-arrange them in weird ways, cutting away pieces when necessary. A lot of my art is made with cassette tapes and old film reels in a series I call ‘Ghost in the Machine’.”
- Erika Iris Simmons
